Public Health Activity-Italy recently hosted a Joint Food Protection Training Summit for Army and Air Force food inspection specialist and public health inspectors in Vicenza, Italy.
The training, which was taught by Army public health food safety officers and food inspection specialist, was designed to help service members develop a better understanding of food protection and safety, how to conduct food and beverage testing, as well as to further enhance food protection skills through in-depth simulations.
Veterinary food inspection specialists inspect food designed for human consumption, in addition to identifying unsanitary conditions in food storage facilities and Commissary stores, as well as evaluating packaging, packing and marking requirements.
This training helped to “increase readiness in Army and Air Force Food inspectors and supported a total force initiative by integrating like training to enable a joint interoperability working relationship with partner branches across the PHA-Italy area of responsibility.” said Chief Warrant Officer Abraham M. Montemayor, PHA-I food safety officer.
Col. Rebecca Porter, Public Health Command Europe commander, sat in on part of the training and took the opportunity to welcome new Army Veterinary Corps officers to the command. She said one of her priorities is to visit PHCE Soldiers frequently to not only show her support, but to also provide leadership guidance.
“Public Health Command Europe is headquartered in Germany but we function worldwide, therefore it is important to maintain a strong and tightly knit relationship with all our activities and Soldiers to enhance readiness.” Porter said.
